Religious Education
The RE Curriculum
The Religious Education Directory (RED), entitled To Know You More Clearly, is a required guide for Catholic schools in England and Wales.
Created by the Catholic Education Service, it offers a high-quality way to teach RE for ages 3–19, focusing on theology, the Bible, and discussion.
The New RE Directory:
- Implementation: Developed by the Catholic Education Service, this framework will be fully used in Catholic schools by 2025.
- Core Structure: The lessons are built around six "branches" or themes each year. These often follow the Church calendar.
- Purpose: The goal is to help young people become "religiously literate" so they can talk confidently about faith, ethics, and spiritual ideas.
- Approach: It focuses on a "knowledge-rich" style that blends Catholic teaching with deep questioning and learning about other religions.
- Time Allocation: The directory confirms that 10% of school time must be dedicated to RE in Catholic schools.
